Jochen Beetz. Sailing his L30.
Banks Sails & the L30 One Design
The development of the Banks Sails sail package for the L30 One Design has been based on practical use within the class. From the beginning, the process has relied on direct input from sailing, testing and racing, with Jochen Beetz from Germany closely involved throughout. Jochen is our Banks Sails point in Germany too.
Jochen: The objective has been clear: to produce sails that deliver consistent performance across the normal operating range of the boat, rather than sails optimized for a narrow set of conditions. From the first test sails to the current specification, development has focused on refining a package that works across the L30 fleet for different crew levels, wind ranges and modes of use. Not everyone has the same level of sailing. The emphasis has been on ease, control and durability.
Key points of the sail package
- Stable flying shapes over time
- Real performance across a broad wind range
- Balanced and predictable handling
- Construction suited to regular racing as well as day-to-day use
- Not overpriced..
In a One Design class, isolated peak performance is of limited value. The priority is a sail package that remains consistent, reliable, and manageable over time.
Development through use
The development process remains ongoing and is based on a straightforward cycle: sail, evaluate, adjust and refine. It never stops.
No unnecessary complexity has been introduced. The focus remains on producing sails that are light, efficient, durable and practical to use within the L30 class.
